Baking Soda Invention

Here’s a quick tip for the “Try This!” category. Okay, before you roll your eyes and say, “really?”, consider this: the baking powder can is designed better than the baking soda box. (Ah, ah! Stop that eye rolling!)

Elsa at 5 — she turns 10 tomorrow!

So, Little House followers may remember the many posts about cooking with my great niece Elsa. (Why is there no such thing as a “grand niece?”) You’ll find several of these posts under the “Recipes” tab, and you can click here to go to the post about Cooking School. The COVID pandemic derailed Cooking School (which had been renamed Cooking Club), but Elsa is now a whiz in the kitchen all by herself!

More often than not, Elsa and I baked our creations, and baking soda, baking powder, and salt were used a lot. It didn’t take long for us to observe that it’s much easier to measure baking powder than baking soda because of the designs of the containers. Baking powder comes in a can with a nifty metal edge for leveling a spoon of powder, while the cardboard of the baking soda box can be trickier for precise measuring. (Believe you me — precise measuring is a hard and fast Cooking School rule!)

Focus two great minds on a problem (one being young and nimble), and a solution is close at hand. Why not repurpose an empty baking powder can to hold baking soda? (Cue the angel chorus!) To help prevent mix ups and mishaps, I used a brand that has a different color can than the red one I normally use and applied mailing labels to both the outside of the can and the top of the lid to clearly mark the can as baking soda. Empty the contents of the box into the can and voila — easier-measuring baking soda! Okay, not rocket science, but it gives me and Elsa pleasure. Go ahead and roll your eyes 😜
