Changing Seasons

The last autumn leaves are clinging to the trees, but it’s been windy and wet lately, so they’ll all be down soon. It’s nice to see new views emerge (there’s a house back there in the woods?!), and the extra light is welcome as the days shorten. (The sun dips behind Mount Israel by 4:00pm this time of year.) In the farm stand, only potatoes and garlic remain. Last chance to stock up!

The greenhouses are shut down (that’s the Bartlett’s boat taking shelter), garlic is in the ground, and the fields are tilled: the farm is ready for winter.

That thudding sound is firewood being tossed on our porch to be neatly stacked under cover. We’ll be able to pop out in our slippers to refill the log bucket and keep our wood stove cranking. We country folk know how to keep cozy!

And Deuce Pigalo is keeping dry in his house after feasting on pumpkins. He’ll be out soon to enjoy a mud bath.

November is hunting season, so Rosie wears her orange vest. Her favorite sport is the chipmunk rodeo, and believe you me, those little critters are keeping her busy wrangling! (She looks a bit tuckered out, doesn’t she?)

Happy fall from all of us in the big woods!
