Bearcamp River Trail

Basket StreetIt’s a hot day in August, so what’s a dog to do? Go swimming, of course! Dogs aren’t allowed at the town beach on Squam Lake, but there are plenty of other places to find water. Beede Falls is a bit crowded during the summer (I featured it in a winter dog walk), but the Bearcamp River is much quieter, and we often head to Charlie’s Bridge.

It’s possible to get to the bridge from our own Mount Israel Road (and I think it’s the best way). That part of the trail takes us along a grassy logging road, into the woods past a beaver dam, and eventually to the bridge. If we want to get to the water as quickly as possible, though, we head out Basket Street to Elm Hill Road.

Bearcamp River Trail signThere’s a pullout for a car or two where the trail crosses the road, and Gracie and Beau are always raring to go. It’s a half mile at most down to the river through lovely woods.

The trail traverses private property, so to be respectful, dogs should either be on leash or under voice command. Also, the trail easement allows for trail walking only. Please no people swimming, fishing, camping, and of course, as Woodsy Owl wisely dictates, no littering! It is a privilege to have access to this beautiful area, so let’s be extra careful to walk softly.

Gracie & Beau into the woods on BRTThe Bearcamp River Trail winds along the river 17 miles through Sandwich and neighboring Tamworth. The Sandwich portion is maintained by the town Conservation Commission. Volunteers (including our neighbor up the road) clear different sections of the trail and make sure they are well marked with yellow blazes on trees.

The dogs lead the way, Beau looking for squirrels and Gracie looking for something to eat. Grass, bark, sticks — she’s not picky. Needless to say, I use the “leave it” command often.

Charlie's Bridge RockCharlie’s Bridge over the Bearcamp River was constructed by hiking friends of the late Charlie Crooker as a way to remember him. The spot is quiet, except for the sound of cascading water, and it is absolutely lovely.

Gracie enjoys cooling off in the basin while Beau plays with the water cascading over the rocks. He bites at the white water, as though he wants to catch it before it gets away! (To see a short video of the dogs at the bridge, click here.)
